Changes and Repairs toward my ST170

I like to keep track of any changes or repairs toward my car and thought I'd share this with you all. Kinda like you would see on a software with an "changelog" file, showing all of the changes being done. New additions are on the top.

  • 5th October 2014 - After almost 8 years of driving, including the epic Europe tour last year (details below from 23rd August) and after 157,400 miles, my car has died. RIP.
  • 5th October 2014 - After some research, it could also mean the cambelt could be the fault. Removed the timing belt coevr and there are broken teeth from the belt. Yep, it slipped. Game over for the engine?
  • 4th October 2014 - Received the VVT solenoid to test it. Fitted it. Fired up the engine. It worked, so my VVT solenoid was broken. However the engine then made some horrible noise. Turned off engine & on. Nothing. Drive belt spinning but nothing is firing up.
  • 2nd October 2014 - Car went into "limp mode" - very slow to drive. Found someone to send me the VVT solenoid so I could test it.
  • 23rd Sept 2014 - Dropped off car at garage. They're unsure what the issue is. So they did an engine flush. However the fault code is still there. Then they admitted that they "do not know anything about ST170 engine" - sigh. Never going there again...
  • 13th Sept 2014 - Engine management light came up. P1381 - Variable Cam Timing over-advanced - as the fault code. Researched, turns out that it could be related to the VVT solenoid...
  • 4th July 2014 - Air & cabin filters changed. Both of them were dirty so looking forward to have a clean air within the car! :D
  • 31st May 2014 - A quick trip to EuroCarParts to get a new battery - Bosch S4 075 (with 4 years warranty) - swapped them round and car started up 1st go. Happy now!
  • 29th May 2014 - Left the headlights on overnight and the battery went flat. Tried to jump start and also charging it up but it was totally dead! Battery was original since 2003 so I suspect it's time for a new battery!
  • 17th May 2014 - Finally found the time to do the tie ends - was piss easy to do the job. An HOWTO will be uploaded here soon to share with you all.
  • 9th May 2014 - All 4 new tyres fitted. And got them tracked/alignment, and this is where the garage found that the track rod end ball joint have some play on both sides (worse on passenger side). Erk, need to buy them so I can replace them!
  • 2nd May 2014 - Decided on Uniroyal Rainsport 3 based on very positive feedback from others.
  • 30th April 2014 - All tyres are running low so researched around to find the next tyres for me to try...
  • 28th Jan 2014 - Turns out the 6 months old fuel filter was the cause. Changed to a new one and it runs better. But the car misfired... spark plugs changed and car is running smoothly now.
  • 26th Jan 2014 - Car broke down on the way home, but managed to limp along the A47 and A11 to get home. ODB plugged in and it came back as P0190 - related to fuel
  • 21st Dec 2012 - Car went in for MOT & passed once again and as usual, some advisories, nothing too bad, just general wear & tear
  • 20th Sept 2013 - Fixed the coolant leak - was from the top pipe of the radiator. All good now.
  • 9th Sept 2013 - Finally, head to Eurotunnel to get back to UK and drove home. What an amazing Europe Tour !!! I really enjoyed driving and in total, I've drivenm over 2,100 miles in total.
  • 5th Sept 2013 - Drove to Paris for a few night stay, where I had to stop a few tiems to keep topping up the coolant.
  • 4th Sept 2013 - Drove to Lyon for an overnight stay. Weather was so hot (around 37C) and getting stuck in the traffic for 1 hour has resulted in a sprung coolant pipe! Losing coolant fluid but thankfully I had some sapre coolant fluid in my boot so topped i up to allow me to drive to the hotel in Lyon.
  • 1st Sept 2013 - Decided to drive to Monte Carlo, Monaco to check out the town and also get to DRIVE on the actual F1 Track! :D :D
  • 31st August 2013 - Drove straight to Nice for a few nights stay
  • 27th August 2013 - Up early to head to Zurich, again for a day tour of this city. Then drove via the Alps to see the amazing sights before heading to Milan for a few nights stay
  • 26th August 2013 - Drove to Luxembourg for a 'day' tour of this city. Then drove to Strasbourg for a tour of the city and also an overnight stay
  • 23rd August 2013 - Start of our EUROPE TOUR ROAD TRIP!! Drove from home to Eurotunnel and then drove to Brussels for a few nights stay

  • 26th July 2013 - Rear brake discs and pads arrived. And rear calipers as well. Getting it fitted soon... it better work! :)
  • 23rd July 2013 - The rear calipers are still giving me issue, so it may look like I will need to get both of them replaced! In the meanwhile, I have ordered the Mintex rear brake discs & pads, ready to go with the new calipers once fitted
  • 23rd July 2013 - Oil, oil filter, fuel filter & coolant drained & changed. That's the quick servicing out of the way!
  • 12th July 2013 - Air con checked out by an specialist - confirmed the coil/clutch is gone. Can't replace that bit so it will need a new compressor. New, used or reconditioned? That's the question...
  • 7th July 2013 - Front & rear wipers changed.
  • 1st July 2013 - Air con checked over by someone at work, pressure switch are all OK. Suspect compressor. Expensive. :(
  • 22nd June 2013 - Had the air con refilled but it's not working. Suspect pressure switch?
  • 9th April 2013 - Tyres changed and also did a wheel alignment - all good now!
  • 8th April 2013 - Been looking around for new tyres and it looks like I'm happy to stay with Falken FK-452 but Falken has upgraded it to FK-453 which is the newer model. Local garage booked to get the tyres changed tomorrow.
  • 6th April 2013 - It's SPRING! That means it's time to change the air filter and other bits. And sort out the bonnet latch/lock as it has not been working now and then for a while. Will need to get the oil changed some day. Oh and it turns out that the tracking/alignment for the front tyres are out... has caused inner shoulder wear! :(

  • 6th Dec 2012 - Good old eBay - ordered all parts needed to get ths fixed up before MOT! Need to find someone to fit them for me cheaply.
  • 5th Dec 2012 - Had my car in the garage for Safety Checks (and also pre MOT checks) - a few parts to replace! Front, lower suspension arms. Rear, left lower suspension arm handbrake cable, and loose exhaust bracket. Time to shop around...
  • 5th Nov 2012 - Dropped off my car at the garage to replace the clutch and flywheel... and then collected on the same day. Wow, what a BIG difference! Biting point is different as well. Need to bed them down for the first 500 miles or so. Big thanks to AP-Tuning for the work!
  • 29th Oct 2012 - After contacting a few garages, have decided to go with AP-Tuning in Norwich based on good reviews. Booked a date with them - 5th Nov.
  • 27th Oct 2012 - Parts arrived. Looking good. Now the hunt is on for a garage to fit them for me.

  • 24th Oct 2012 - Found a closed road and did some testing... confirmed clutch is slipping on all gears! Time to replace them! Any recommendations?

  • 19th Sept 2012 - Autumn is coming, need to change my headlight bulbs as my existing ones are not good enough when driving in the dark. Any recommendations?
  • 2nd Aug 2012 - After a week of not doing anything with the rear wiper, it has started to work again itself! Whatever the problem is, it seems to have fixed itself. Very odd!
  • 26th July 2012 - Rear wiper has stopped working. When I activate it, it sweeps but stops halfway/quarter. If I 'force' it to sweep, it works and then stops again.Checked fuse and relay, seems OK. Checked motor, might be suspect...
  • 16th Mar 2012 - The bulb used to light up the mileage backlight on my dashboard has blown. Looks like too much hassle to get the dashboard removed to repalce the bulb. Hum ho!

  • 26th Feb 2011 - Around a month later, the new brakes system has bedded down and I'm finding them good, almost as good as my previous Black Diamond brake setup. So I think it was a good purchase!
  • 17th Jan 2011 - Received the today, so need to find the time to fit them to see what I think of it. :D
